Anatomy and Physiology Online Course

Aims of the Programme

The Anatomy and Physiology Online Course is designed to help students build a strong foundation in the structure and function of the human body. It enables students to:

  • apply anatomical and physiological terminology accurately across their studies in biological and natural medicine
  • develop a detailed understanding of the body’s structure, organisation, and function

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding

  • demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic principles of anatomy and physiology
  • develop the confidence to study more advanced anatomical and physiological texts
  • understand the location and topography of organs and organ systems within the body
  • interpret blood tests at a basic level and understand how findings relate to physiological systems
  • recognise anatomical structures throughout the body at both the macro and micro levels
  • understand the main physiological systems, their functions, and basic pathological changes

Cognitive and Intellectual Skills

Students will also be able to:

  • understand the fundamental principles of human anatomy and physiology
  • identify diagrams and visual representations of body structures, including their three-dimensional relationships
  • understand how living organisms are organised and how humans share biological properties with animals, plants, and microorganisms
  • use and pronounce the common vocabulary of anatomy and physiology correctly

How Learning Is Supported

Online Materials

The course uses a wide range of online learning tools, including:

  • coloured illustrated diagrams and photographs to make learning more visual
  • 3D-style anatomical images to make structures easier to understand
  • explanations of feedback systems such as receptors, control centres, and effectors
  • quizzes that allow students to assess and reinforce their understanding throughout the course

Tutor Support

All students have access to a tutor whom they can contact if they need help or clarification during their studies.

Assignments

Each lesson includes a short assignment or quiz to help students revise the material before progressing to the next section.

Course Structure and Assessment

  • There are no prerequisite studies required for this course.
  • The course consists of 25 lessons covering the major body systems and their organisation.
  • Each lesson is followed by an assignment of 10 true/false or multiple-choice questions, giving a total of 25 assignments.
  • Assignment grades contribute to the final course mark.
  • A timed final exam is completed online at the end of the course.
  • The final exam consists of 60 questions, all drawn from the lesson assignments.
  • Assignments and the final exam are equally weighted, meaning that ongoing coursework contributes just as much to the final grade as the final examination.

Course Curriculum

The course covers the following major areas:

  • anatomical language
  • organ systems
  • axial skeleton
  • appendicular skeleton
  • joints and synovial joint movements
  • skeletal muscles and their actions
